There are a number of reasons why your Sub Zero refrigerator stopped cooling. At Authorized Refrigeration Sub Zero Repair, our technicians are highly skilled in diagnosing which component or components are worn or malfunctioning. As exclusive Sub Zero repair technicians, we will diagnose and make the necessary refrigerator repairs. Before we leave, your refrigerator will be operating to Sub Zero factory, cooling specifications.
Your Sub Zero is designed to keep its temperature at 38 degrees. If it rises above that, we’ve made a list of all the possible causes of a hot Sub Zero.
Temperature setting. If your refrigerator temperature control is set too high, you will experience a warm fridge. If you have a control dial, make sure it is set between 4 and 6 until you achieve a constant 38. The outside (ambient) temperature can effect the temperature in your fridge, so as the seasons change, you may have to adjust your control dial up or down within that 4 to 6 range.
If your Sub Zero model has an electronic control panel, set the temperature to 38 degrees.
The door was ajar. If this happens, close the door and allow your Sub Zero to reset.
Door gaskets (seals) cracked. Like leaving the door ajar, if your gaskets are cracked or worn, cold air meant for the refrigerator cabinet will escape. This will make the compressor and all the other cooling components to work harder and the combination will result in your Sub Zero not cooling.
Not level. To operate correctly, your Sub Zero refrigerator must be level. If your home suffers a foundation issue, or other infrastructure problem it could make your Sub Zero not level. If this is the case, level your Sub Zero and once your infrastructure issue is resolved, level it again.
Bad thermostat. The thermostat measures the temperature in your Sub Zero fridge cabinet. When it goes out, the system will be unable to keep the proper temperature.
Bad Thermistor (thermostat sensor). The Sub Zero thermostat sensor, senses the temperature within your refrigerator cabinet. When the thermistor goes bad, the system cannot regulate the proper temperature.
Dirty Condenser coils. When it comes to your Sub Zero refrigerator not cooling, a common fix is cleaning your condenser coils from all the dust and debris that accumulates over time. When your machine is running, air is circulating throughout.
Your condenser coils are extremely thin strips of metal, assembled very close together. Its purpose is to collect the heat absorbed by the refrigerant and disburse that heat.
When clogged, the coils can no longer release the heat as designed, thus the heat gets trapped.
Dead or failing compressor. The compressor compresses the refrigerant and circulates it through other components of the refrigeration system to maintain the correct cooling temperature. It’s the “heart” of your Sub Zero. Over time this vital part will wear out and needs to be replaced.
Refrigerant leak. Over time and constant pressure, the parts that the refrigerant passes through can become corroded causing the part’s structure to fail. When the integrity of the part’s structure fails, leaks occur and the part or parts will need replaced. An example of parts that leak refrigerant would be the evaporator coils.
Bad evaporator fan. The Sub Zero evaporator fan pulls air over the evaporator to supply cold air to your fridge. When the fan is not working, it cannot keep your refrigerator cold.
Bad evaporator fan switch. When the evaporator fan switch goes out, the evaporator fan will not turn, stopping the proper flow of air and your Sub Zero refrigerator stops cooling correctly.
Bad condenser fan. The condenser gets hot as your refrigerator is running. The condenser fan cools the condenser and the condenser coils. When the fan is not turning, your Sub Zero doesn’t cool efficiently.
Bad condenser fan switch. Just like the evaporator fan switch, if the condenser fan switch goes bad, the fan will no longer turn to move heat.
Bad control board. As the condenser is the “heart” of your Sub Zero, the control board is the “brains” of its operation. The control board collects and monitors the operation of the entire refrigeration system including sensors, compressor operating time, how often the door opens, etc.
When the control board goes out, your Sub Zero won’t cool.
Clogged or Cracked Heat Exchanger. The heat exchanger in your Sub Zero fridge has a sophisticated design too complicated to explain in this article. Suffice to say it’s part of the sealed cooling system and the process of transferring hot refrigerant (gas) to be cooled into a liquid and back again during the cooling (refrigeration) process loop.
